Tips and Inspiration
From Unilever Beauty Experts
Is your makeup remover causing your skin to break out? Maybe it’s not hiyang to your skin? Consider making your own gentle makeup remover at home. It’s a fun way to play chemist and indulge the beauty nerd in you! Plus, you can learn more about alternative ingredients that align with the skincare benefits you want.
Try this simple cleansing balm recipe using these two key ingredients: shea butter and tea tree oil. While this can serve as a good DIY alternative, it’s important to note that it may not offer the same level of quality as lab-made versions that undergo rigorous testing.
Still, it’s worth trying to make with these natural ingredients. Shea butter is known for its deep moisturizing properties. It can help soften and soothe dry skin, and maintain its natural barrier, too. Tea tree oil, meanwhile, is a powerhouse ingredient with natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. It helps manage acne and irritation, while gently cleansing the pores.
Used together, you get a natural makeup remover that can be used on dry, combination, and even acne-prone skin. It’s quite easy to make, too!
Put your beauty nerd glasses on and follow these simple steps.
Place your double boiler over the stove. Fill up the bottom pan with one to two inches of water. Make sure that the water level doesn’t reach the bottom of the top pot.
Using a measuring cup, take 1.5 ounces of solid shea butter. This will serve as the base of your cleansing balm, providing a rich and creamy texture that’s easy to use and apply.
Put the shea butter into the top pot of your double boiler. Heat over medium temperature until it is fully melted. You can stir it occasionally to ensure a smooth, even texture. Remember to monitor the heat level at all times to prevent the shea butter from burning!
Once the shea butter has completely melted, remove the boiler from the heat. Allow it to cool slightly before proceeding to the next step.
Measure 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil and add to the mix. Stir thoroughly to ensure that the oil is evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
A small pot or jar with a secure lid is a good option for storing your DIY cleansing balm. Make sure your container is not too deep and that it has a wide opening.
Clean your airtight container and pat dry. Once ready, carefully pour the mixture into it.
Allow the balm to cool. Let it solidify at room temperature for two to three hours. If you want quicker results, you can also place it inside the fridge after it cools down. Check occasionally to see if your balm is solid and good to use.
Congrats, your DIY makeup remover is ready! To use it, scoop a small amount with clean fingers or use a spatula. You can warm the product between your fingertips to soften it. Then, gently massage onto your face.
Next, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, or you can wipe away the balm using a soft, damp cloth. Finish by patting your face dry with a clean towel. Mm-hmmm. How does that feel?
Start double cleansing with your homemade makeup remover. It can gently melt away makeup, sunscreen, and other impurities from your skin.
Follow with your usual cleanser or try POND'S Bright Miracle Ultimate Oil Control Facial Foam, which has activated charcoal to help deeply cleanse pores, remove excess oil, and brighten skin.
After use, remember to store your shea butter and tea tree oil cleansing balm in a cool, dry place to keep it in good condition. If the product causes a reaction on your skin, consult with your dermatologist.
By making – and using – your own gentle makeup remover, you’re sure to be putting nourishing and natural ingredients on your skin. Shea butter and tea tree oil are a potent combination – not only for cleansing your skin but also for pampering it. Doesn’t it feel great to DIY a skincare essential made just for you and your skin’s needs?
