Ever considered getting lip tattoos? Whether to get fuller lips or enhance your lip color, lip tattoos are the modern beauty girl’s solution to that never-ending quest to get their puckers looking lip-smacking 24/7. With your desired lip color tattooed in, you can say goodbye to your ever-growing lipstick collection. (Or maybe you can keep a few!).
If you’re ready to take the risk and only need a little more convincing, keep reading for a quick guide on getting a semi-permanent lip tattoo.
Lip tattooing, which is also called lip blushing, is a form of semi-permanent makeup that brings back color to your puckers. The process involves applying color pigments onto your lips through small needles or a cosmetic tattoo gun.
The goal? It’s really up to you. You might want an MLBB shade or an artificial retouch of your natural lip color that has faded with age. Or you can opt to get that “just got bitten” effect.
On the day of your appointment, you’ll be asked to fill in forms and sign a waiver for clearance. Then, discuss your goals (and whys) with your tattoo artist. Share photos of sample lip colors you like, or bring your favorite tube of lipstick. They might not match the exact color of your peg, but they will recommend a color that suits your skin tone.
Your lips can be treated to get a neutral color first, such as when they’re two-toned or have uneven discoloration. Then, they will apply your desired color.
To do this, the artist will outline or dot your lips for reference before using the tool to transfer the color pigments on your lips. Don’t worry – they will also apply topical anesthesia to make it as pain-free as possible.
Once done, a cooling, soothing balm will be applied to your lips to help them heal. Don’t be shookt at the initial result – expect your lips to swell a little and your new lip color to be extra vibrant. That should fade into the expected color in a few days.
How long do lip tattoos last? Generally, the color can last up to three years and can be retouched every six months, yearly, or every two years. It depends on your lips’ condition and what your artist says.
Preparation plays a big role in getting you comfortable and excited about the idea of getting a lip tattoo. Research thoroughly, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Before making the big decision and before the actual tattooing day, here are some things to keep in mind.
Research the clinics offering the service and, if possible, meet your artist beforehand. Ask questions about their history and process so you know what you’re getting into. That way, you’re clear about the pros and cons of the procedure.
Share all the vital information about your history and skin condition, so they can also recommend treatment plans accordingly.
Drink enough water. Refrain from using cosmetics that can dry out your skin. Keep your lips and skin pampered with a hardworking moisturizer. Try a shea butter balm or an ointment with natural oils for your lips.
As for your skin, try POND'S Bright Miracle Day Serum for spotless and radiant skin, and follow with a moisturizer to lock in hydration. Then, apply POND’S UV Hydrate Sunscreen, which delivers SPF and hydrating skincare benefits to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays.
Slough off dry skin from your lips with a lip scrub. Start this step at least a week before your appointment. Always moisturize with a lip balm and put on SPF to protect your puckers.
The procedure takes about three to five hours, so you’d want to come in with a full stomach. Plus, eating well helps your lips heal faster from the micro-injuries of the tattoo.
You’ll likely be asked to stop taking blood-thinning medications or antibiotics, if you’re on any. Consult your doctor for alternatives. Alcohol and coffee are also no-nos before your procedure as these can also cause blood thinning. Avoid too much sun. Don’t get treatments like chemical peels or laser in the meantime as these can make your skin more sensitive.
Generally, it’s best to communicate your desired look with your artist before they start tattooing. Still, if you find the outcome a little too sheer or a tad too much, you can alter the color or intensity when you go back for re-touches.
Aftercare is just as important. The success of a lip tattoo highly relies on how well you take care of it after your treatment. Expect your lips to swell or feel more tender than usual. Its color might look OA now, but that will soon subside and look closer to your target tint. In four to six weeks, your lips should be back to normal – but better. Just remember to do the following:
Fresh from the tattoo session, your lips may swell, turn dry, or flake. Try not to pick on the skin. Always apply an ointment to keep it moisturized and protected.
While it’s in its healing stage, make sure to give it extra TLC. Wipe it clean and pat it dry. Rinse your lips with cold water after a meal. Drink everything – cold and hot drinks – out of a straw.
Smoking might cause your new lip color to fade, plus, the smoke might irritate your newly tattooed lips. Refrain from kissing in the meantime to avoid possible contamination.
Whether it’s just a checkup or to retouch or tone-correct your lip color, make sure to keep your appointments and don’t delay them. That way, you can keep your brand-new MLBB color well-maintained.
Now that you’ve got the 411 on lip tattoos down pat, it’s high time you made that bold, brave choice. And TBF, it’s not really a risk per se when you’re getting into it well-informed and well-prepared, right? Off you go to get your dream lips – ta-ta! *flying kiss*
