Pregnancy brings about many changes in your body – dark armpit lines included. If you’re an expectant mom and notice this change, there’s no need to panic. These skin changes are typically caused by hormonal shifts and are temporary.
Still, it’s completely natural if you’re feeling self-conscious about them. Keep reading for dermatologist-recommended tips on how you can effectively manage and care for your sensitive, pregnancy skin.
“During pregnancy, skin changes happen due to fluctuations in your hormones,” says Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang, a board-certified dermatologist known as Derma Mama on social media. An increase in melanocyte-stimulating hormones causes the excess production of melanin, which leads to hyperpigmentation or the darkening of the skin.
Studies say hyperpigmentation during pregnancy likely occurs between the first and 14th week of pregnancy. During this time, existing dark marks can become more visible. Areas like the armpits, which are more friction-prone, can also be more susceptible to darkening.
“Pregnant skin is more sensitive,” Dr. Jarische points out. “This combination of hormonal changes and friction can result in noticeable dark lines under the arms."
While the appearance of dark armpit lines may make you feel unpretty, it’s important to remember that these changes are likely temporary. Once your hormones stabilize after you give birth, the pigmentation usually fades.
Dr. Jarische advises exercising caution when dealing with dark underarms during pregnancy. “Avoid using harsh whitening products,” she says. “Be careful since some lightening ingredients may contain hydroquinone and retinoids, which are not safe for pregnant women."
Instead, she recommends focusing on gentle skincare practices at this phase, especially since your skin is more delicate.
To prevent irritating the skin and promote recovery post-pregnancy, Dr. Jarische shares some hygiene and lifestyle tips to try.
Take a daily bath or shower as usual and use a mild body wash or soap. Harsh soaps can lead to skin irritation and dryness and potentially worsen skin pigmentation, especially during pregnancy.
You might be tempted to, but avoid using exfoliating scrubs, especially on your underarms. Doing so can further irritate your sensitive skin and cause more complications.
Tight clothing can cause friction in your underarm area and contribute to further darkening. Go for breathable, loose-fitting clothes to avoid skin irritation. You’ll feel fresher and more comfortable.
As your skin is extra sensitive during this period, try not to introduce new skin or body care products to your routine in the meantime. Doing so may lead to allergic reactions or irritation. Instead, stick to the skincare and hygiene products you know are mild, safe, and gentle.
Remember the rule of thumb: When in doubt, consult with your doctor to ensure that the products you are using are safe for pregnant women.
Look for deodorants or antiperspirants specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options are ideal, especially for pregnant women.
Go for hardworking deodorants infused with skin-nourishing ingredients. Try Dove Radiant + Care Deodorant Dry Serum 3% Niacinamide 10x Vitamin C & E Dark Marks Reducer which contains skin-loving ingredients to nourish your underarms.
Consider a serum for your underarms. Dove Radiant + Care Deodorant Serum Roll On - Deep Renew with 3% Niacinamide and 10x Collagen is a dual-powered deodorant-slash-serum that helps promote skin repair.
For dark marks, lines, and chicken skin, Dove Radiant + Care Deodorant Serum Roll On - Pore Smoother with 3% Niacinamide and 10x Omega6 has powerful skincare ingredients to help improve your underarm skin texture.
Make sure to pat your skin dry (gently!) after you shower, as this reduces the risk of irritation and allows the skin to heal. Plus, moisture in the underarm area can become a breeding ground for bacteria.
During pregnancy, the way your body processes sugars can be disrupted. When your blood sugar level is high, it can cause dry and delicate skin that can be more prone to pigmentation.
While it pays to be consistent with your skin care, a balanced diet can play a big role, too. Stay hydrated and eat more foods that promote skin healing, such as antioxidant- and vitamin C-rich foods, to support your overall skin health.
Pregnancy is an incredible journey of growth and transformation. Changes to your skin, like armpit lines and dark spots, are natural signs of the amazing work your body is doing. With these dermatologist-recommended tips, you can keep your skin healthy and well-cared-for throughout this special time. Remember to treat your skin – and yourself – with patience and care!
