Tips and Inspiration
From Unilever Beauty Experts
Fashion is meant to be a fun way to express yourself and make you feel your best. But while fashion is for all, the industry hasn’t always celebrated all body types. In the past, if you didn’t fit the mold (read: you’re not a size zero!), the rule was to cover, hide, or camouflage. Thankfully, this isn’t the case anymore – and plus-size fashion is here and ever-evolving.
“I’m glad that we have more celebrated plus-size women icons who serve as inspiration to women and younger girls,” says Ingrid Nieto-Pagulayan, a certified image, color, and personal style consultant.
“Plus-size women icons, musicians, and creators have used their spheres of influence to amplify their message of loving their body, prioritizing health and strength, and enjoying and using fashion to express who they are while looking good and confident,” she adds.
When it comes to style, there really is no size limit. Get plus-size fashion inspiration below as Ingrid shares some outfit combinations to cop – and outdated trends to let go of.
Hiding behind shapeless or oversized clothes is a thing of the past. Sticking to wearing only loose clothing just limits your options and makes you look frumpy, especially when not done right. “This can throw off your vertical and horizontal proportions and make you look sloppy and disheveled,” Ingrid points out.
Layering, when done right, can level up your look instantly. “Layering can make you look very pleasing and elegantly sharp,” says Ingrid. “It’s all about choosing the correct garments and silhouettes using the right fabric bulk and surface.” Try contrasting elements – such as soft knits worn with structured outerwear – to add dimension to your look.
“Who says you can only stick with black and dark colors?” says Ingrid. For years, plus-size fashion trends have told you to wear black, black, black. It’s supposedly the safest color choice for plus-size women and the only way to look slimmer. But relying on mostly dark shades is out of trend and can only make you feel uninspired to dress up.
“Plus size women can benefit from color dressing, especially with the right fabric, cut, and shape,” says Ingrid. Choose fabric types and fits that complement your body shape, like a flowy dress, tailored trousers, or innerwear that hugs (not constricts!) your curves.
Experiment with colors that complement your skin tone and give you that glow. Bright colors, bold prints, and playful patterns can actually add vibrancy to your wardrobe. “You can get that wonderful energy by learning how to use your colors right,” says Ingrid.
Empire waist dresses, for instance, can sometimes resemble maternity wear, especially when they lack structure. “The empire waist is a classic, but it can be styled and worn in a way that is modern, classy, and still sexy,” points out Ingrid.
Consider empire-waist pieces with a modern twist. Think elegant necklines, structured fabrics, or cinched waists. These define your figure without overwhelming it.
You really shouldn’t be too focused on hiding your waist. There are plenty of interesting ways to show your body – stylishly. “Don't be afraid to combine different textures in an outfit,” says Ingrid. Add an edge to your look by combining satin with lace, or cotton with leather, for example. This creates visual interest and creates dimension with the mishmash of texture.
Another secret to looking your best? It’s leaving the house knowing you look neat, well-styled, and fresh. Make sure your hair matches your look. Use TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum to help manage the frizz, dryness, and flyaways, and achieve shinier and softer hair.
Try Vaseline Gluta Hya Serum Burst Lotion Flawless Bright for an instant confidence boost, as this helps promote the skin’s natural radiance for brighter and glowing skin. Lastly, don’t forget your deo! Use Dove Radiant + Care Deodorant Serum Roll On - Dark Marks Reducer with 3% Niacinamide and 10x Vitamin C&E to help even out the skin on your underarms and reduce dark spots.
Fashion is your armor – don’t let it hold you back. Plus-size fashion today is ultimately about wearing what makes you look and feel good. Make your everyday outfits extra – fun, colorful, and interesting as you are!
